Natural Antioxidants

What Are Natural Antioxidants in Pet Food?

Oxidative rancidity is one of the primary causes of shelf life deterioration in pet food. Fats and oils exposed to air, heat, and light undergo oxidation that produces off-flavours, reduces palatability, and destroys fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). Antioxidants interrupt this oxidation cascade to extend shelf life and maintain nutritional integrity.

Natural antioxidants — derived from plants rather than synthesized chemically — are preferred by manufacturers targeting clean-label formulations. Rosemary extract provides carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid as active antioxidants. Mixed tocopherols provide the full spectrum of naturally occurring vitamin E isomers as a stabilizer. Atora supplies both in liquid form from approved Chinese suppliers, with full TDS and COA documentation.

Common Applications

  • Fat and oil stabilization at supplier level (added into fats before delivery)
  • In-formula stabilization of fat-containing kibble, mixes, and concentrates
  • Clean-label natural preservation claim support ("preserved with natural rosemary extract")
  • Preservation of dry kibble and semi-moist pet food during extended shelf life periods
  • Vitamin E supplementation in food products (tocopherols have dual function)
  • Antioxidant protection in palatant and flavour blends
  • Complement to nitrogen flushing or modified atmosphere packaging

Key Benefits

  • Plant-derived — suitable for clean-label and natural positioning
  • Effective against oxidative rancidity in fats, oils, and finished products
  • Rosemary extract: labelled as natural without chemical name requirement in many markets
  • Mixed tocopherols: dual function as antioxidant and source of vitamin E
  • Can be specified for pre-treatment at fat supplier level or added in-formula

Documentation & Supplier Assurance

Antioxidant effectiveness depends on active content — a product labelled "rosemary extract" must have confirmed carnosic acid levels to perform. Atora provides TDS with active content declaration and batch COA so your QA team can verify what they are applying.

🔬
Active Content Declared in TDS
Rosemary extract TDS declares carnosic acid basis; tocopherol TDS declares total and individual isomers — so you know exactly what you are applying and at what rate.
📋
Batch COA per Shipment
Certificate of Analysis issued per batch covering active content, appearance, solubility, and other specification parameters relevant to the product.
🌿
Plant-Derived, Clean-Label Compatible
Both products are derived from natural plant sources and are compatible with "natural preservation" label language in most export markets.
🌏
Regulatory Support
Documentation supports import and use in target markets. Country of origin documentation available for customs and labeling compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between rosemary extract and mixed tocopherols?
Rosemary extract works by scavenging free radicals through carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid — highly effective in fat-containing systems and labelled on-pack as "rosemary extract" without requiring a chemical name. Mixed tocopherols provide the four naturally occurring vitamin E isomers (alpha, beta, gamma, delta) which protect fats through a chain-breaking mechanism, and also count as a source of vitamin E for nutritional labeling. The two can be used in combination for enhanced protection at lower individual inclusion rates.
How do natural antioxidants compare to synthetic alternatives like BHA or BHT?
Synthetic antioxidants such as BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin have historically offered strong cost efficiency and activity. However, regulatory restrictions on these substances are increasing in many markets, and consumer preference for "natural" labelling has driven demand for natural alternatives. Natural antioxidants are generally effective for most pet food applications — particularly when used at appropriate inclusion rates and when combined with good packaging and storage practices.
What application rates are typically used?
Application rates depend on the fat content of the product, the target shelf life, and other protective factors (packaging, moisture, temperature). Typical application rates range from 100–300 ppm of rosemary extract (5% active) in fat or finished product. Mixed tocopherols are typically applied at 200–500 ppm. Your Atora contact can advise on rates based on your specific formulation — and we recommend accelerated shelf life testing to confirm efficacy before commercial launch.
Can antioxidants be added to fats and oils before delivery?
Yes. If you are sourcing fats and oils through Atora, you can specify the antioxidant system and it can be incorporated before dispatch. Alternatively, the antioxidant concentrates can be supplied separately for in-house addition to your fat coating system or formulation. Specify your preferred approach at time of inquiry and we will confirm what is possible.
What documentation is available for antioxidants?
Available documentation includes TDS (active content, form, application guidance), batch COA (active content, appearance, solubility parameters), MSDS, and Country of Origin. HALAL certification is not applicable to these products. Request specific documents via the contact form and we will provide what is available.
