Protein Meals & MDMs

What Are Protein Meals?

Protein meals are rendered and dried protein concentrates produced from animal raw materials through heat treatment and moisture removal. The rendering process concentrates protein content into a stable, storable powder suitable for large-scale pet food manufacturing. They serve as the primary declared protein source in most dry kibble formulations and contribute to total crude protein, essential amino acid profile, and nutritional density.

Atora supplies a range of protein meals including standard poultry and salmon options and novel proteins — kangaroo, venison, wild boar, and insect meal — for limited-ingredient, hypoallergenic, and premium brand differentiation. Quality is evaluated through protein percentage, moisture, ash, and fat content as confirmed in the TDS and COA per shipment.

Common Applications

  • Primary declared protein source in dry kibble formulations
  • Protein enrichment in wet food, loaf, and pâté formats
  • High-protein and high-meat positioning in premium products
  • Multi-protein formulations with species differentiation
  • Limited-ingredient diets (LID) using single novel protein sources
  • Hypoallergenic formulations using kangaroo, venison, or insect meal
  • Cost-optimized protein blending alongside whole protein ingredients

Key Benefits

  • High crude protein content — typically 60–80% depending on species and origin
  • Stable shelf life compared to fresh or frozen protein ingredients
  • Multi-origin sourcing — Australia, Chile, Peru, Korea, Thailand available
  • Novel protein options for LID, hypoallergenic, and differentiated brand positioning
  • Full TDS and batch COA available on request per shipment

Documentation & Supplier Assurance

Atora sources protein meals from qualified suppliers across multiple origins and can provide the documentation your procurement and QA teams need to evaluate and approve ingredients before trial or purchase.

Protein meal quality varies significantly between suppliers and origins. Our role is to identify the options that match your protein specification, share documentation for review, and support your sourcing decision — not to sell any product until you are satisfied it meets your standards.

🌏
Multi-Origin Sourcing
We source from suppliers in Australia, Chile, New Zealand, Korea, and Thailand — allowing buyers to compare origins, costs, and specifications before committing.
🧪
Protein Specification Verification
COA per shipment confirms crude protein, moisture, fat, and ash content. Third-party retesting can be arranged on receipt if required by your QA protocol.
📄
Full Species Traceability
Country of Origin documentation confirms species source for labeling, import, and regulatory compliance purposes. We do not mix origins without buyer consent.
🤝
Supplier Due Diligence Support
Supplier facility information and quality documents can be shared for buyer due diligence review before any commercial purchase is made.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical protein percentage in chicken meal versus salmon MDM?
Chicken meal typically contains 60–70% crude protein on a dry matter basis. Salmon MDM (Mechanically Deboned Meat) has a higher moisture content and correspondingly lower dry-matter protein — typically 14–18% on an as-fed basis, which equates to around 70–80% on a dry matter basis. The exact specification for each product is confirmed in the TDS. We recommend requesting the TDS for any product you are evaluating to compare on a consistent dry matter basis.
How do protein meals differ from by-product meals?
Protein meals — such as chicken meal — are produced from the whole carcass (excluding feathers) after slaughter. By-product meals are produced from non-skeletal muscle parts such as heads, feet, viscera, and bones. The protein content and amino acid profile differs between meal types. TDS documents clearly state the source material and the specific designation (meal vs. by-product meal) for accurate ingredient declaration on your product label.
What countries of origin are available for protein meals?
We source protein meals from multiple origins including Australia (kangaroo, venison), Chile and Norway (salmon), Korea and Thailand (poultry), and New Zealand (venison). Multi-origin sourcing allows buyers to compare quality, price, and documentation across suppliers. For each product inquiry we will confirm the specific origin and available documentation.
Can I receive a batch-specific COA for each shipment?
Yes. A Certificate of Analysis confirming the test results for each production batch is provided with every commercial shipment. The COA includes crude protein, moisture, fat, ash, and any additional parameters agreed at the time of purchase. The testing laboratory name and methodology are included on the COA document.
What is the minimum order quantity for protein meals?
Minimum order quantities vary by product type and origin. For standard poultry and salmon products, commercial orders are typically from 1 MT upward depending on packaging configuration. For novel proteins such as kangaroo or venison meal, minimum quantities may be higher due to supply constraints. Contact us with your target product and volume to confirm the minimum applicable to your inquiry.
